Miami Sports

Good morning again everyone! I am going to get right to it but before I do please note the following:

1. This blog post will be a bit longer than normal so know that going in

2. It deals with WAY different subject matter than I normally post on but I’m trying to expand my writing skills and this is something I am very passionate about.

3. Hold on!

Ok as someone that grew up in Miami in the 70’s and 80’s I have a unique perspective on sports in my hometown. Growing up we didn’t have many options as football was all we had. Quite honestly though its all we needed; the Dolphins were dominating the NFL and there wasn’t really a need or want for anything else. That did change though as Miami grew into a nationally recognized city for movies and things other than football. Honestly I still to this day can only get real passionate about football but the other sports are growing on me.

I say all that to lay the foundation of what sports in Miami has become. Yesterday, Derek Jeter did to our Miami Marlins what the previous owners did the whole time they owned the team; displayed the level of ignorance that makes one wonder why MLB even has a team in Miami. For those that don’t understand, basically every time the Marlins are on the cusp of something special, they trade all the great players and start over in the name of the almighty dollar. Yes we have won two World Series Championships but even they were tainted by the fire sell that came the next year.

What has happened with the Marlins is a joke; a joke played by people that don’t care about the sport and more importantly the fans that pay their hard earned money to go to these games. Now Miami will always be a football town; if the Marlins were playing a World Series game at home and down the road the Dolphins were playing a playoff game at home NO-ONE would be at the Marlins game; its just the way it is. However, there is a large segment of the population that would love to see a new tradition started in baseball; Derek Jeter seems to be doing all he can to stop that however and its a travesty against the great fans in Miami.

I guess what makes it hard is the Dolphins have been mediocre for so long; the city is just in search of a winner. For those like me that grew up in an era where Miami could do no wrong, its a bitter pill to swallow sometimes. Miami fans deserve better; like it or not sports is a vital part of our society. It can bring us together in ways that nothing else can; all we need is a little hope that the people running our teams care about their fans and are willing to do what it takes to get us where we need to be.

All that said, last night we had some hope as my Fins took down the mighty Patriots. No one is giving them any credit this morning but us true fans know it had nothing to do with them having an off night but us giving them a hard night. For now, that is enough for this writer. Interestingly enough Derek Jeter was at the Dolphins game last night; hopefully he saw how fans react to a winner and took some good notes. This city deserves better; make it happen Jeter.

Thanks everyone for reading my diatribe in local sports. Let me know what you think at my first stab at it. Until then. SMILE!

Dolphins Win!!

Good morning! My boys shocked the world last night!! Stay tuned for my post on this and other interesting takes on the state of sports in my hometown. Something different? You bet! Full of SMILES and LAUGHS today!

Why Argue?

Good Sunday to everyone! Up nice and early for me on a Sunday and for one reason only, MIAMI DOLPHINS FOOTBALL!! How many UK peeps do I have out there? Hopefully your supporting my Fins and not those Saints! You all always make the Dolphins feel right at home and I know they appreciate it; maybe soon London will have their own NFL franchise. 🙂 But I digress; question for you all this morning…why do we have to argue??

In today’s world we just cant seem to get away from arguing and insulting those that share a different opinion than us. You know its ok that we don’t all view things the same way right? For instance, some guy on Twitter couldn’t even have a football conversation without it turning to insults. I had expressed that the hit given by the Chicago Bears player deserved more than a two game suspension. To me the hit was clearly intended to severely hurt the other player (in the head) who had to be airlifted to the hospital. He is ok (for now) but I was of the opinion that he deserved more than a two game suspsension. Well Mr. Happy Pants disagreed and said I had an “idiotic way of thinking” on the subject. Really? So is that your best defense to a topic is to name call the other person? I just don’t get it. So I quickly ended the conversation (because the Bible says something about arguing with fools) and told him to have a nice day. He kept on anyway to which point I muted him. But, the point is still out there; why must we resort to name calling and insults when we have a conversation with someone that shares a different viewpoint than us?

It has been going on since Jesus’ day but I always hear how we must be more “tolerant” of people and their ways. Does that mean only people that agree with YOU? I think what some are really wanting is a dictatorship not free expression of thought and ideas. Make no mistake, this comes from all sides; not just the liberals, conservatives, you are just as bad with this. We must be able to have a civilized conversation without it turning to insults. Any two year old can throw a fit and name call; is that what we have become? A world of overgrown two year olds? What say you? In between the football games, let me know your thoughts! Have a great Sunday and Go Fins!!

Peace, Love, and Truth,

P.S. Oh I almost forgot, yesterday a new record was set for views on this blog; 78!! That is incredible for me, plus six new people joined us on our journey. Just had to thank you all and let’s keep it going! Please share this blog on your Twitter, Facebook, etc. Thank you!!!
